LAS VEGAS, NV – Today marks the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day since the Board of Clark County Commissioners passed the Resolution declaring it every second Monday in October.
Taylor Patterson, Executive Director of Native Voters Alliance Nevada, said:
“This is a shift in the correct direction. It is long overdue for us to move past the narrative that Columbus is the most interesting part of the story. The people that were here before Columbus and persisted long after, still need their story told. Indigenous Peoples’ Day will make that shift possible. The people of Clark County can finally begin to learn the real story of this land and the original stewards of it.
I’m beyond grateful to the Clark County Commission for taking action to correct the history books. This is a great first step but we cannot forget that there is more work to do. We still have a long way to go in healing the wounds of America’s past.”
